SARAH – Securing and Retaining Affordable Housing

In Response to a Basic Human Need

Housing Information Services (HIS) continues to seek and secure funding for programs to improve the quality of life for all citizens.  In response to the basic need to obtain appropriate affordable housing for the most vulnerable, including the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in our community, HIS created a comprehensive support program designated SARAH (Securing and Retaining Affordable Housing).

About SARAH

SARAH,  funded by the City of Windsor’s Consolidated Homelessness Prevention Initiative (CHPI), is designed to support individuals and families experiencing homelessness in an effort to obtain or retain permanent housing and connect them to the community services that are available to them.

The Salvation Army, Windsor, OntarioHousing Information Services (HIS), in collaboration with the Salvation Army Emergency Hostel (SA/EH), provide daily on-site assistance at the Salvation Army to ensure individuals in the City of Windsor who are living in shelters, motels, or other temporary accommodations, are able to secure and maintain appropriate affordable housing.

The Objectives of SARAH are:
    1. To improve access to and connect households experiencing homelessness with the system of community services; and
    2. To support households experiencing homelessness/at-risk of homelessness to obtain or retain longer-term housing by:
  • providing a point of access to services for individuals staying at the Salvation Army Shelter or in a motel;
  • connecting these individuals with resources that are needed to stabilize their housing;
  • establishing relationships with Landlords that provide affordable housing;
  • viewing housing options before referring them;
  • assisting individuals in completing Central Housing applications.
